DIY Aged Clay Pots

March 26, 2019

It’s funny how one project can quickly lead to another, which can lead to another, which can lead to another. After completing our DIY built-ins (post HERE) it left our buffet without a home. So, I rearranged some furniture a little bit and put it in our dining room. In doing that, I then had a big, blank wall above it without a clue as to what to do with it. Shortly after, I decided to create the book wall art (post HERE) and absolutely love it, but once finished, I knew I wanted something to coordinate with the books for on top of the buffet.

Thus, enter the idea for the pots. I wanted to give them a bit of an aged look, and while I saw many tutorials online, I didn’t want to put THAT much effort into it, so I decided to wing it and try something myself with materials I had on-hand. ( I never ended up using the spray paint pictured, this was just me playing with the arrangement so I could decide if I needed all of the pots or not.)

Materials:

Clay pots

White paint

A few paper towels

A little bowl of water

Gloves (optional)

2″ (or so) paint brush

Directions:

For the majority of the pots, all I did was get a little of the white paint on my paper towel, dip it in a little water, then I rubbed that in a horizontal direction on the pots, just covering it lightly. That is IT!

I did want the pots to look different, so I decided to age some of the pots a little more. I did this by using a dry 2″ paintbrush and lightly painting the pots again in a horizontal direction. And then when finished, I went over it with my damp paper towel to blend it to my liking.

And to make a couple of them have a gray tone, I just added a very little bit of black acrylic paint to my white paint and did the same process of lightly painting it on, and then wiping with my paper towel.

And this was my finished product!

I think these could be used in so many places! On shelves, on the front or back patio, on a mantle; pretty much anywhere!

As always, thanks for stopping by!

  1. Love this so much! I’ve posted some fun DIY painted terra cotta pot projects on my blog and I always start out with aging or whitewashing the pots to give them that vintage feel. Your method is beautiful!
