Our DIY Built-In Lockers – The Reveal!

July 25, 2019

As I had shared yesterday, our front room used to be a catch-all. It was the first thing you saw as you entered our home and one I tried to mentally block every time I walked by. I finally decided enough was enough, and that we needed a change for this room.

So, I drew up a plan to make some built-in lockers so that we had a place for things like backpacks, coats, gloves, shoes, etc.

I wrote out the process on THIS blog post, so refer to that if you would like to read all about the little details.

But today is all about the reveal! And here it is! You guys. I absolutely LOVE how this turned out! This room went from an eye-sore to a room we all gravitate to and I am one HAPPY lady when things are organized, so you can only imagine my enjoyment now that everything has a place.

I was initially deciding between painting this thing white or the moody blue we have on our fireplace. But then I got a glimpse of my favorite green chair and just felt the urge to try something new, maybe a little riskier? And MY GOSH! I am SO glad I did! I absolutely LOVE the color and the gold hardware and accents just compliment it so well. I will be showing it all on video on my Instagram stories if you want to see it “live”- Just check my highlights! For reference, the color is Deep Forest Pine from Home Depot.

Every locker has a gold three-pronged swivel hook for things like jackets and sweaters, as well as three wooden peg hooks. The bottom peg is for their backpacks, and the two on the sides are for anything extra. The woven baskets above will hold extra things like scarves and gloves, and the bottom pull-out drawers will house all the shoes.

All of the doors and drawers have soft-close hardware so that things can’t be slammed shut, which is huge for us!

And in the back of the locker designated for my husband and me is an outlet that has multiple plug-ins, and in the back of every kid’s drawer is a hole for a long cord to go through someday. Our thinking is that someday they may have phones that we won’t want them taking them to their rooms at night. So, they will each charge them in the lockers.

I wanted the unit to go all the way to the ceiling, but the only things that could really go up on the top shelf were decor items since it was so high up, so I decided to line it with white books as I did in our living room. (You can see that HERE.)

We are all SO happy with these built-ins and even though it was a lot of work, it was worth it for the functionality it serves our family. (For reference, they took about 3 weeks to complete, working when we could.) And I HAVE to mention, a big reason I went with the bold green color is because of THIS amazing rug! I absolutely love the modern look of it and it works so well in this room! Plus, it’s soft on the feet and will hide aaaaaaaall the kid mess! Highly recommend this brand!

Shortly after we started to build these, I decided putting in a big desk along the opposing window would finally give me a place to fold our family’s laundry (my other option was our dining table, ha!) and it would also give us all a nice place to do homework or other deskwork. So, what was once this side of the room….

was also made over and I will be revealing it next week! I am waiting for the stools to arrive, which are the final pieces to this room makeover. I have LOVED showing this process step-by-step with you all and if you missed any of it, you can see it all saved to my highlights on Instagram, HERE under Mudroom 1, Mudroom 2, and Mudroom 3.

  1. This looks great! I’m wondering if you think you’ll still love this as much when your kids are teens? We have snow gear to hang. Right now my kids are short and little and so their gear doesn’t hang real low but at some point it will! And so will my 6’2 husband’s… I’m wondering if I want to do away with the drawer/bench and go to the floor and am looking for some thoughts from someone who has it! Would you do anything differently now that you’ve had it for a while?
