Our Front Yard Makeover

June 7, 2019

Gosh, looking back, the exterior of our house come a long way! It’s funny, we never used to think our house looked “hidden” until we started taking out bushes and thorny shrubs, which lead to taking out more bushes and shrubs, which lead to eventually taking them all out. Be gone!

We initially took out the first batch so that we could build a porch swing and then paint our home, and it made a huge difference!

Our most recent project, which happened on a whim while grinding out the stumps from the old shrubs, took place when we decided to remove the rose bushes you can see below. We found that when on the porch swing, we couldn’t really see the street as we had hoped and ultimately decided we just aren’t rose people.

And even though we tried keeping them short, we found that the cushions on the porch swing kept getting dirty due to all the dirt below, so we decided to change things up a bit.

And we did this by taking the rose bushes out and putting grass down instead! And we could not love it ANY more! It has really opened up a whole new seating and play area for our family and our yard suddenly feels so much bigger. It has become a place we retreat to at the end of the day, and it just has a really nice feel to it.

And, dirt no longer gets on the swing! It really was the right thing to do!

I wanted to create a little seating area so that when some of us are outside on the porch swing, others could also sit nearby. I ended up finding the perfect stackable chairs (linked below) and the rest just kindof came together!

We also took out that long row of thorny bushes, which were the last bunch “hiding” our home. We feel like we can finally see everything now, and we are so happy with the end result. Who knew taking things AWAY from our home would bring so much joy?!

  1. Wow, your yard looks great!! Removing those rose bushes definitely opened up the front and now we can see your lovely porch swing! My husband and I had a landscape architect design and put together our front yard because we both are not design savvy. But now I want to add some planters to our windows, yours look so lovely!
