Homemade Playdough- Great Toddler/Young Child Activity!

September 27, 2012

Being kept indoors due to cold weather or napping little brothers isn’t always fun, so one afternoon Gwyn and I made Playdough. It was easier than I thought it would be, so I tried two different recipes to see if there was any difference. Both recipes came from this website, and one definitely worked better than the other.

For the first batch we made the “Colored Playdough” recipe. (Winner!)

Colored Playdough
Materials
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon cream of tartar
  • Food coloring
  • Saucepan
  • 1 cup flour
Directions
  1. Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tartar, and food coloring in a saucepan and heat until warm.
  2. Remove from heat and add flour.
  3. Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tartar makes this dough last 6 months or longer, so resist the temptation to omit this ingredient if you don’t have it on hand.

Gwyn helped pour in ingredients..

And chose the colors, which she was very excited to do.

For the first batch, pink!

Then knead, knead, knead!

And then it’s play time!

For the second batch we made the “Salt Playdough” recipe and made it turquoise.

This recipe was pretty vague with quantities and came out pretty sticky/mushy.

So we played with the pink! I store it in a Ziploc and it’s still perfectly good!

Have fun!
