The Tall Girl’s Mom- A Guest Post in Response

July 17, 2012

My mom, after reading yesterday’s post, wrote this little number in response. I suppose she had a thing or two to say in her defense!

A “Guest Post” from Shannon’s Mom

So, for those of you who might be wondering “just how tall was she?”

7 yrs old – 4’ 4” – dr’s note in file has “97th +-  percentile for ht. and wt.”

8 yrs old – 4’7”

9 yrs old – 4’10”

10 yrs old – 5 feet tall!!!

11 yrs old – 5’4”

12 yrs old – 5’6”

13 yrs old – 5’7”

14 yrs old – 5’8”

And don’t get me started on shoe size!!  At least a ladies size 7 or 8, around 4th grade.  So, challenging to say the least.

No way were the dresses in the girls department long enough in length or in the sleeves, or fit in the shoulders. Try finding “little girl” looking dresses and dress shoes in the woman’s department of the very few storesin Carson or Reno at that time.  Point taken…Though you’ve made me sound like a beast. 😉 Thanks….Mom. (J/k) Maybe I was…

And finding jeans and other pants that were long enough was a nightmare.   I had to let down many hems as far as they could go. Thank goodness you could work a needle!

Dad tried to talk you into “boy’s jeans” – as they came in longer lengths – but noooo… you wouldn’t have any part of wearing boy’s jeans. Yeah, I already LOOKED like a boy in the second grade, you think I wanted to dress like one too!? Alright, more on this later…

The “cowboy themed” concert?  (Westward Ho!) –  That was when you were in 4thgrade  (4’10” tall.)  We scoured Carson City for a shirt to wear – Anyone from Seeliger remember the “Beef Jerkey” song?  You loved those black tennis shoes, all you would wear were “white tube socks” and you did your own hair, BTW. Yes, Mom, I remember doing my own hair. But you LET me leave the house like that! 😉

Remember when you were in band in middle school and had to have white jeans for the parades?  OMG!!!  Really?   We finally found white jeans (In October, mind you) at the Boot Barn Western Wear – for $70.00 – for a pair of jeans that got worn, what, maybe twice? That was pretty nice of you…

By fourth grade, you had very definite ideas on how to style your own hair, missy!   Which led to the “Unit” in Jr. High – and you know what I’m referring to! J I suppose I should reveal what this was…

So, here’s hoping that by the time Gwyneth is in 3rd or 4th grade, shopping for “age appropriate” clothing for little girls, that actually fit, is a whole lot easier now than it was back then. I sure hope so too, because my word! Some of what I wore was hideous! Though I know I’m not alone out there. I have proof in photos, people!

Love you! Love you too, Mom. Thank you so much for all of your hard work and for making sure I had what I needed, when I needed it. 🙂
