Dear Oldest Child

October 27, 2015

You were my first baby.

The one who made me a mama.

The one who taught me how to love in a way I never thought possible.

You were my one and only baby for two years. Two years where I learned all about you.

What you needed. What you wanted. How you lived. How you loved.

You taught me a lot about myself, too.

You were my first baby.

And then your baby brother was born. And you instantly fell in love. We all did.

But you fell out of your current role as baby and  into the role of big sister.

I was scared for you. Nervous. More than a little afraid.

You fell into that role beautifully, though.

Always wanting to care for your brother.

Always wanting to  lend a helping hand to your mama.

And always wanting to be a big girl for your family.

But one thing I feel guilty about is how fast you grew up. How independent you had to become.

And I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all that you have done. For allowing me to take care of others when needed.

For being patient. And understanding. And a blessing.

We are about to welcome another new baby into our home.

And you have shown nothing but excitement as you kiss my belly goodbye each day at school. Hello at lunch. And goodnight at bedtime.

I think you are aware that things are once again going to change.

But there is one thing I hope you always know.

Something I try to tell you often.

Something I whisper to you when you are sleeping.

That no matter what new role you take on or who else joins our family…

You will always be my baby.

Forever and ever, always my baby.
