Gwyn’s Bedroom Furniture Makeover with Heirloom Traditions Paint

November 6, 2014

Now that Gwyn is out of the baby phase she was due for a bedroom makeover. About a year ago we got Gwyn a french provincial bedroom set at a great price from Craigslist  but I knew that it needed new paint. The walls of her bedroom are a light cream color and the furniture as-is would have just blended together.

No good.

Being in a rental, though, kept me from doing any real decorating so now that we are moved into our house and settled in I have started piecing her room together.

Her furniture has been sitting in the garage for about three weeks while we settled into our house and once we felt good about everything, I decided to tackle the daunting task of painting her furniture.

It was something I was previously dreading to do. The thought of stripping the original paint, sanding the pieces down, priming the furniture, painting two to three coats, and then sealing it all about kept me from ever doing it, period.

Until, I tried the line of paint products from Heirloom Traditions Paint.

By using Hairloom Traditions Paint I was able to skip the sanding and priming AND I wasn’t bombarded by any harsh fumes while painting. I even felt okay with my kids riding their scooters in the garage with the doors open  while I painted.

For Gwyn’s room I was painting a head and foot board, a tall dresser and a vanity desk with chair.

Heirloom Traditions Paint offers a large line of colors and waxes to achieve almost any look.

I wanted her furniture to have a fresh, crisp feel and something that could be used for years to come, so I decided to go with a classic white, or Ala Mode, as it is called at Heirloom Traditions.

My prime painting window was during nap time, and during the first day I sprayed a quick  coat of primer on it (though now that I see how the paint works I don’t think it needed it) and was able  to put a first coat on the headboard and vanity. The next day I put a first coat on the dresser, chair and foot board. I allowed each coat to dry 24 hours. (For a painting tutorial, click HERE)

The next two nap times I applied  the second coat to all of the pieces and then let it dry.

On the final day I roughed up the edges a tad and then applied the sealant, which was Heirloom Traditions’ Clear Wax. For a tutorial on how to do that, click HERE. I had trouble with the wax brush, though,  as the bristles tended to keep falling out as I waxed, so I ended up getting an old white towel and used that instead.  In the end, though, the pieces were easily waxed, sealed and had a nice sheen to them.

Change is usually pretty hard for Gwyn as she likes things “as-is,” but she repeatedly told me how pretty the furniture was looking while I did all of this so I am pretty certain she likes the outcome. And I do, too!  (I am keeping my eye out for new hardware, so if you know of something that would look great with these pieces, let me know!)

When I do projects I like a quick outcome and this did not disappoint! Had I used traditional paint this would have taken A LOT longer and I most likely would have  given up.

But, now her new furniture is in her room and looks great!

Which means…. now I can decorate!

I want her room to have a classic, pretty look.

  1. These turned out really great!! You are doing an amazing job with this new house. I’m so jealous we are living in temporary housing. You’re giving me a major decorating bug!!

Also, did you make those flowers on either side of the vanity? They’re so cute and girly 🙂

  2. Thank you, Melissa! Oh trust me, I feel your pain! We waited over five years to decorate since we didn’t know what house we would be in! And yes! I did make the flowers 🙂 I should do a tutorial!
