Our Love Story- Part 1

March 31, 2014

It started about nine years ago back in college.

I was a Sophomore. He a Senior (x2).

It was a Tuesday night and a pal and I met up with some of friends at the good ol’ Cue and Cushion where the infamous ten cent drafts were served a plenty. This was the new hangout for those random Tuesday nights when we had nothing else to do, (study?) so while chugging sipping our beer (they were small, let me remind you, ten cents) my pal and I walked across the room to say hello to a couple of  acquaintances,  older acquaintances, that we felt pretty cool talking to.

While chatting a booming voice came from behind and we annoyingly wondered who could possibly be so awkwardly loud.
Him: “HI!!!”
Me: Totally taken aback and embarrassed for being caught off-guard, I stopped what I was saying and turned around to  see  an older, blue-eyed, TALL (gasp! I could wear heals!) heartthrob with the biggest grin on his face looking right into my eyes sitting at a table with his friends, who were also watching the interaction take place.
Terror.
I didn’t know what to do or say so I mustered up a meager “hi” in my most confident voice possible as I flashed a half-smile trying to act as nonchalantly cool as I possibly could.  Not knowing what else to say as he beamed that beautiful smile at me,  I turned my back as my face flushed and continued talking with my friends, not having a clue as to what words were blabbering out of my mouth. After feeling a hole burning in my back, I couldn’t take it anymore and walked away.
I didn’t  look back because I knew he was  looking . I also didn’t know how to act around good-looking older guys that made me feel funny.
Fast-forward a couple of months (I think) and on Facebook, believe it or not…
Him: “How tall are you?”
Me: ……………………………………………………………….”5’10”. Why? Who is this?”
Him: “You’re the girl from the bar.”
Me: “What bar?”
Him: “You were talking to my friend, Kevin.”
Me: Pause. Oh, God. It’s him. The mystery guy. What do I say?! Say something witty! And smart! Pause. Uhhhhh. “Oh. Hi.”
I truthfully cannot remember the conversation past this point. I was somewhat creeped out that he found me on Facebook, but knew it wasn’t too much of a stretch with our mutual friends, yet I was still creeped out that he asked  my height. Why would that matter? But I was intrigued. This random gorgeous man was talking to me and I couldn’t stop talking to him. I just, couldn’t. I felt like I had seen all there is to see in our little group of college hangout usuals and yet I had never seen this mystery man. This extremely good-looking mystery guy.
And so we kept talking. And he was confident, and funny, and older and ooo that was exciting, and witty, and intelligent. And we had yet to hang out. We just… talked.
While chatting one evening…
Him: “You should come over and watch a movie with me.”
Me: “Uhhhh, no.”
Him: “Why not?”
Me: “Because I am smarter than that. You could kidnap and kill me and no one would know where I am.”
Him: “I live with three girls. We can all watch a movie together.”
Me: “Mmmm, nope. They could be in on it. I’ve seen that happen in movies.”
Him: “What if you bring a friend?”
Me: “Yeah….. no. Who knows who is really over there.”
Him: “I promise I live with three girls and they’re all here right now.”
Me: “That’s strange. Why do you live with three girls.”
Him: “I needed a place to live and they needed a roommate. It just kind-of worked out.”
Me: “Hmmm. Yeah, still not coming over.”
Another chat session…
Him:”I need to go get some groceries, why don’t you go to Wal-mart with me? You can get anything you want. Anything at all. Anything under $20, that is. Aaaaaannnything you want. Under $20.”
Me: Laughing, “Um, no thanks. Wal-mart is probably code for kidnapping.”
And on another instance
Him: “Come to my football game. It’s well-populated and you won’t be kidnapped. I promise.”
Me: “I’ll think about it.” -Code for no.
Him: “Well then come to a volleyball game with me. I got us tickets.” (I used to play volleyball.)
Me: “I’ll think about it.”
Him: “You should come. It will be fun and there will be a lot of people there.”
Me: “Mmmmmm maybe.”
I never went. Not to anything he invited me to.
And the truth is, I was scared. I really didn’t know this guy besides our internet conversations and he was very persistent, which was flattering, but I also didn’t know how to act around someone like him. And I was afraid that I’d goof it up if we actually met up in person. And then he wouldn’t want to talk to me anymore. So I continued to shut him down. It almost became a game for us both.
And then some time passed and I became someone else’s girlfriend.
He was nice and treated me well.
But the mystery guy, he didn’t give up…
