While at times I still miss living in a larger city, this small city living sure has its benefits.

The sense of community in the town that I live in is incredible. When I was pregnant with Gwyneth, I attended one “Mommy Group” before giving birth. I didn’t know any of the women there. They didn’t know me. I was just “the new girl about to pop.”

Well, I had Gwyneth and a few days later, meals just started showing up on my door. From strangers! We were in disbelief!

These women had arranged to bring our new little family meals for six weeks. SIX WEEKS!

Absolutely mind blowing. The last thing on my mind with a newborn was what I was going to make for dinner that night, so to have meals already taken care of was simply heavenly.

Well, now the generosity has begun again, and I just couldn’t be more thankful to be a part of such a giving community.

We received our first meal last night and it was absolutely delicious. Shepherds Pie, a fresh green salad with yummy mixings, and the naughtiest cookies I have ever had. Simply sinful.

And the giving doesn’t stop there. Someone is constantly offering something that we may need or that their children have outgrown. “Need more clothes? How about a bathtub? Do you need a food mill? A bedside sleeper? How about a bounce chair?” In fact, a friend is on her way right now with baga of newborn clothing, as I didn’t think we would need much in that size. Apparently these boys pee on everything and I go through it much faster than I thought.

Noted!

And the part that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside? I didn’t even ask her. She just….. offered. 🙂

“Need anything from the grocery store too? I am on my way and can swing by your house.”

I just don’t think we would be having the same experience in a bigger city. I may be wrong. But nonetheless, I am incredibly thankful for the support and generosity of those around me. 🙂

If you are at all interested in delivering meals like this in your area, the tool that we use to make this all happen is www.takethemameal.com. This site allows people to sign up online and they can include what meal they plan on bringing if they wish, and it gives the recipient’s address, any allergies to avoid, and any necessary contact information. This service is not only beneficial for the arrival of a new baby, but for the loss of a loved one, or just for someone who could use a helping hand.
