In 1949, at the tender age of 16, Maurice Devereaux (Grandpa Mo) joined the Marine Corps Reserves.
Still a child, he knew his calling.
And somehow...somehow, he convinced his parents to let him go.
He was called to active duty when the Korean War broke out and due to being underage, had to lie to get in.
He was seventeen.
He was with the 1st Marine Division, 5th Marines, B Company.
When they landed in Korea it was well behind the enemy lines.
And on June 13th, Grandpa Mo was part of the Point Squad when a North Korean soldier stood up and threw a grenade at him.
He was hit in the back.
Grandpa Mo was taken to Battalion Medical and due to where the shrapnel was located in his back they had to leave it in.
And that is where it remains today.
For this, he earned his Purple Heart medal.

The Marine Corps is where Grandpa Mo retired twenty-three years later in 1972.
We are proud of our war hero. And so very thankful for what he has done and what he represents.
