Yep, some folks just don’t ever clean their kitchen so doing their dishes every time you babysat would be painful. I expect very little from our babysitters in terms of cleaning, but I do appreciate if the things the kids did WITH the babysitter is tidied to some degree when I get back. I try to remember that watching and interacting with my kids is more important to me then how clean my kitchen is before or after I leave. I rarely get out (4 kids, sticking to our budget lifestyle) and most babysitters can’t handle 4 kids, so I take what I can get and be thankful for their help. As to private bedroom…meh. I just had an overnight babysitter and we changed the sheets/linens…told her she can sleep in our bed or the couch whichever she preferred. She chose the bed (I don’t blame her!), and we didn’t mind in the least. We don’t have an ensuite, so she used “our” bathroom too. I guess it depends on how private you feel about your bedroom and bathroom.

So I put locks on all my internal doors. It was exasperating I never trusted any of them again and commenced returning home earlier because I was concerned for my son. I ended up going to another service where I found a more trustworthy carer.

So shouldn’t you be concerned with what parents can do to get and keep a good babysitter?
I’m lucky enough to get paid well and often for my babysitting services, because I’m an experienced, loving, reliable sitter.
If I was caring for multiple children and a parent came home and say that because a playroom was messy, I must have been on my phone, or acted upset because I hadn’t washed their dishes (or swept!?!) while the kids were asleep, or talked derisively about me “sitting on the couch scrolling instagram” after the kids are asleep (when, in fact, once they’re asleep, being nearby and read to spring into action if they need something is what I’m paid for) I almost certainly would not sit for that family again.
You’re paying a person to watch your children, and if they do a great job *at watching your children* that should be plenty; combination maid/nannies are much more expensive.
They always have the option to find other families; you might not find another sitter (you said yourself– it’s hard!). A little respect goes a long way.

One time my youngest cousin, (just over 1) slipped while I was giving them their bath before bed, and his older sister (4) pushed his head out of water before I could grab him. I was so shaken, he was a little afraid of the water for a while, but he ended up fine.

Another time, my cousins had a different babysitter, the oldest (4) slipped and hit her head. The worst part? The babysitter acted as nothing happened, and when my aunt got back, my little cousin ended up needing to get her chin glued. I babysit for them most of the time now.
